Zantac Class Action Lawsuits Current Status

Zantac class action lawsuits are against the manufacturers of the medicine Zantac. Zantac is a popular heartburn medicine sold on prescription as well as over the counter all over America.

This medicine is under the radar as, according to a study, it contains a cancer-causing containment, NDMA. Zantac in America is sold and manufactured by two big pharmaceutical companies Sanofi and Boehringer Ingelheim.

The FDA, along with many other reputed organizations like the WHO and EPA have shown concerns over the use of Zantac. According to their findings, it contains NDMA, i.e., a carcinogen.

NDMA is also responsible for causing bodily harm like developing tumors in the liver and kidney, leading to colorectal cancer, causing gastric problems, etc.

Zantac, also known as Ranitidine, is reported to have 3,000,000 mg of NDMA per tablet. The permissible amount of mg per tablet should not be more than 96 mg as per FDA. This means Zantac has over 30,000 times more NDMA, which makes it totally unsafe to consume.

First Zantac Class-Action Lawsuits

The very first class-action lawsuit was filed in California against the pharmaceutical company that manufactures Zantac. The lawsuits allege that both the companies knew of the dangers of NDMA in Ranitidine and still failed to warn its patients of its side effects.

Along with Zantac class-action lawsuits, a number of individual lawsuits have been filed in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Florida. Apart from in California, worldwide class-action lawsuits has been now filed against both of them. As a result, the Zantac is currently out of the shelves of all major stores like Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, and others.

A Deep Analysis Into Zantac’s NDMA Contamination

Ron Najafi has to be appreciated for the discovery of Zantac’s NDMA presence. Najafi, Emery’s CEO, was one of the expert witnesses during Zantac litigations who asserts the contamination of NDMA in Zantac.

According to Najafi, Zantac may have accumulated NDMA over time and not when it is manufactured. It may become contaminated when it is stored in warehouses and on shelves without any air-conditioning. Ron also claims that it may be possible that Zantac is produced safely, but when it leaves the hands of the manufacturers, it starts to lose it.

However, both the manufacturers are still to be blamed as the packaging of the medicine contains no warning labels that warn of its safe shipping temperatures or other storage conditions when kept on shelves.

Antacid Recalls

As a result of an increasing number of lawsuits against the two pharmaceutical companies producing Ranitidine, other manufacturers producing antacids have also been called upon for product recalls in 2020.

Other pharmaceutical manufacturers producing Ranitidine like Northwind Pharmaceuticals, Glenmark, Appco, and Mylan have withdrawn their products from the market and sent for recalls. A recall refers to rechecking the contents of the medicine not to pose dangers when in use.

Emery Pharma, as mentioned above, has stated, the presence of NDMA in Zantac will be more as long as it is exposed to heat. This validates the tests conducted by the Valisure on the presence of NDMA in Zantac as the test was performed in unreasonably high temperatures.
